Pressure is mounting on the Senate to urgently find a solution to the revenue allocation stalemate so that Counties can receive the funds to run operations. Addressing residents during the burial of renowned history and geography teacher Morris Mulupi, brother to the former Kanduyi MP Alfred Khang’ati in Namwacha village, leaders led by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said it is unfortunate that the Senate has not been able to reach a concensus on the formula yet. He disclosed that they are giving them a deadline time frame until 17th September, if the stalemate persists, the Governors will be forced to stall County operations and send workers home.
Oparanya said the Counties cannot be held at ransom by few individuals and that the interest of Kenyans must be given priority. His sentiments were echoed by Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati who said he agrees with the new formula that Counties with a huge population must be allocated more funds. He called upon Senators from Western Kenya to be vibrant and be on the front line to ensure the bill is passed as soon as possible. Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa said they shouldn’t let Kenyans down and that devolution was meant to assist people at the grassroots level.
On his part, Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi said there should be equitable distribution of resources in the country, stating that discrimination in allocation of funds should be a thing of the past. The leaders also rooted for the leasing of state owned sugar mills as away of ensuring they continue with operations.
