Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, has reiterated the country’s commitment to the African Union (AU) following the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson election. Despite Kenya’s candidate, Raila Odinga, not securing the position, Wetang’ula emphasized that his bid represented Kenya’s collective aspirations for Africa’s leadership on the global stage.
Speaking about the election, Wetang’ula noted that Odinga’s candidacy was not just a personal endeavor but a national effort, symbolizing Kenya’s dedication to pan-Africanism and regional unity. He stressed that Africa’s immense resources should translate into prosperity for its people, urging for stronger efforts to tackle poverty and underdevelopment across the continent.
Wetang’ula also called on the newly elected AUC Chairperson, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Abdi Muhammad, to collaborate with all African nations, regardless of their stance during the election, to push Africa’s interests forward. He emphasized that Africa’s role in global leadership should not just be as invitees but as active participants who shape the global agenda.
In a separate statement, Wetang’ula dismissed concerns that the election outcome would disrupt Kenya’s governance, asserting that the country’s leadership remains united in its commitment to national development. He called for a focus on the future, urging leaders to prioritize service delivery over political differences.
