Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has urged the national government to address other heavy problems facing Kenyans apart from the Covid-19, citing issues like floods, and surges in Cholera and Malaria cases. Different parts of Kenya have grappled with heavy rains leading to floods, mudslides and diseases even as the number of Covid-19 cases in Kenya have reached 465. “As we focus on Covid-19, I want to urge the government, that there are equally more dangerous life threatening calamities facing Kenyans,” he noted.
Wetangula said the heavy rains in Western Kenya are only comparable to devastating rains back in 1961 which caused flooding in the region. He said Nzoia river is already full and may be in a worse condition than it is now in a couple of days, “If it continues raining like this for the next 2 weeks, the bridge carrying traffic from Mombasa to Western Kenya, Uganda and beyond at Webuye, Kaburengu, is in danger of being submerged and destroyed,” he added.
The Bungoma Senator said infrastructure across the County is under serious stress, with things like footbridges destroyed and people have to travel long distances to reach their destinations. He revealed that the Malakisi bridge connecting the road from Bungoma to Malakisi and to the border in Lwakhakha has been partly swept away. He further called attention to potential surge in diseases like Malaria and Cholera in parts of Kenya.
