Tens of women from Sinai village in Mautuma location Lugari Sub County stage a demonstration against a man whom they accused of regularly mistreating his wife.
Carrying twigs and singing song castigating the husband, the women led by Mrs. Alice Ombima an official from a women based organization stormed Mr. Geoffrey Atundo’s compound accusing him of regularly assaulting his wife Jesca Atundo.
The women were irked by the Tuesday morning incident where Mr. Atundo decided to burn his wife’s clothes.
“I was called by a neighbour informing me that Geoffrey Atundo had heaped his wife’s clothes outside and was burning them, when I came I found a group of women already gathered at the trading center and we decided to demonstrate to this compound to express our anger,” said Ombima.
They said they had been silently observing Atundo assault Jessica regularly since marrying a second wife and they couldn’t stand it anymore.
“This man has been battering his wife on several occasions and we are bitter about it we demand respect to all women , we cannot continue sitting back and watch as our fellow woman suffer, this violence against women must end,” said Mrs. Rael Otweche.
The women threatened to discipline Mr. Atundo before the church leaders, elders and local administrators led by Mr. Jared Odongo intervened to calm the situation.
In a brief reconciliation meeting held in the compound it was revealed that Atundo had abandoned his family and left all the responsibilities to his wife.
He neither provided food nor pays fees for his secondary school going children besides other basic needs.
He was accused of spending most of his time with the second wife Elizabeth Atundo and whenever he went to his fist wife he battered her.
Mr. Atundo admitted his mistake and accepted to reconcile with his Jessica promising to change his behavior for better. He also promised to buy her new clothes.
He was however fined provide a sheep that could be slaughtered to cleanse the family.
