“Women our time is now.” These were the words of Agnes Zani, the Kwale County nominated senator who is also an ODM member when at Lusonyo Stadium in Bumala Sub County, Budalangi constituency of Busia County during the ODM party tour to Western Kenya.
Ms. Zani called on women all over the country to stand firm without prejudice and fear and use the available resources that have been provided through the devolution system to improve on their social and economic status.
According to her, times have changed and so has the government hence it is only through this system of government that women can benefit better.
Ms. Zani stated that devolution has created a platform for equality for all women whether in the deepest part of the rural areas or the rising urban areas and that they should not be left behind but instead utilize the opportunity that has been given to them to better their lives and the society at large.
She further stated that both her and her counterparts in the party have decided to stand and fight for the party of their choice and they are willing to motivate other women to do the same.
These statements were backed with shouts of joy from the crowd who gathered massively at the stadium.
The Busia county first lady Judy Ojaamong’ who has always lived and acted by example to ensure that women in her county improve their lives, echoed the same saying they should not accept to be bought by politicians.
She also urged them to be wise in making decisions that affect them and their children as they are the flag bearers of society.
Elizabeth Ongoro who is a nominated senator from Kasarani constituency was not left behind as she urged women to learn to be independent and take leadership roles that have been availed to them by the constitution.
Cord leader Raila Odinga who was the man for the day, promised to work with women in his government citing that as a party they have allowed them to work and participate in the crucial aspects of the party and that his government will create more platforms to enable them to be leaders.
Others in attendance who promised to support women once the party took leadership of the country were Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho and His Counterpart Hassan Omar who said that women and the youth will be considered as they hold seventy percent of the country population.
The meeting which was the first of its kind, was attended by Busia County Mrs. Judy Ojaamong, Busia County Mca Rose Odewa, senior women officials in the county were among others.
