Today, the world unites to celebrate World Environment Day under a powerful and urgent theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.” As plastic waste continues to choke our rivers, oceans, and communities, this year’s message is clear it’s time to turn the tide on plastic.
According to UN-Water, over 11 million tons of plastic wastes pollute water bodies like rivers and lakes every year. These plastics don’t just damage marine ecosystems they find their way into our food, water, and even the air we breathe. The impact on human health is devastating, with micro plastics linked to hormonal disruptions, cancers, and other serious health risks.
Despite growing awareness, the problem persists. The United Nations reports that nearly 400 million tons of plastic are produced annually and less than 10% is recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, the oceans, or burned, releasing toxic chemicals.
This World Environment Day, individuals, businesses, and governments are being urged to:
- Rethink their use of plastic in daily life.
- Reduce single-use plastics by choosing reusable options.
- Replace plastic with sustainable materials like bamboo, glass, metal, or biodegradable alternatives.
World Environment Day has been observed every June 5th since 1973 under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It serves as the largest global platform for environmental public outreach, engaging millions across more than 150 countries.
