Kenya has today recorded the highest number of covid-19 deaths in 24 hours since the virus was first confirmed in Kenya last year March. According to the day’s update, 28 more people succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, an increase of 11 from the number given yesterday when 17 deaths were recorded.
Health Cabinet Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi in today’s covid-19 update said Kenyans have lowered their guard in the fight against the pandemic thus the surging numbers of infections.
Since the country has been warned that we are already in the third wave, she added, it is time to return to the basics, by strictly adhering to the containment measures advised before. Out of a sample size of 7732 people tested in the last 24 hours, 1354 have been confirmed positive for the disease, raising the number of infections to 118,889 so far in the country.
“This is a very worrying trend and all efforts must be made to arrest the situation. The majority of us have thrown all caution to the window. This must not be the case,” she said.
The number of those being admitted to hospital has also shot up, and as of today, 830 are admitted to various health facilities while 2,332 are on home-based Isolation and care. According to the ministry of health, as of today, 123 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, ICU.
“The numbers of those being admitted into our health facilities with the virus has also been rising at an alarming rate. Many of these are on supplementary oxygen. In Fact, a total of 148 are being supported with supplemental and supplementary oxygen. 17 others have been moved to the High Dependency Unit (HDU),”
On a positive note, today 185 patients have recovered from the disease, 136 from the Home-Based and Isolation Care, while 49 are from various health facilities. Total recoveries now stand at 89,388.
On the Vaccination Exercise countrywide: The ministry says a total of 355,500 doses have been distributed in 10 regional stores countrywide including the Military from a total allocation of 530,000 doses. The regional stores include Eldoret, Garissa, Kakamega, Kisumu, Mandera, Meru, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, and the Military. As of today, 28,255 health workers, teachers, and security personnel have been vaccinated.
