Youths in Kakamega County have been challenged to enroll in county polytechnics and pursue the highly marketable technical courses offered free in the institutions.
Speaking during the first graduation ceremony at Lumakanda County polytechnic in Lugari Sub County, the County Executive Committee Member for Education, Science and Technology Dr. George Akolo Lutomia noted that the County government has invested a lot in establishing polytechnics to offer more training opportunities.
He urged thousands of jobless youths who didn’t get opportunity to join universities and other middle level colleges to embrace opportunity offered by the County government to enable them pursue various courses for free disclosing the County government of Kakamega has enhanced all polytechnics to offer diploma courses.
The CEC expressed confidence that graduates from the polytechnics across the County will not lack jobs because the skills acquired during training allow them to be self-employed in various areas they trained for.

“Those who completed secondary education and did not join universities can enroll with technical courses. Demand for technicians in the country is still high and also one can employ him or herself,” said Dr. Lutomia.
He mentioned Soy, Kakamega and Butere polytechnics as institutions having a major positive impact on the communities around them.
Lutomia revealed that the County Government had rolled out a program where uniforms for various schools spread throughout the County are made by graduates from the County polytechnics.
He thanked the Lumakanda polytechnic board of management for being the first polytechnic in the entire County to honor its graduates by holding a graduation ceremony and appealed to other polytechnics to emulate the same.
Addressing the event, polytechnic Principal Egley Ashilenje said graduates from five key skill areas were equipped with enough knowledge to carry on with their work.

Ashilenje praised the government for promoting polytechnics across the country adding that class eight and form four students had capability of doing various causes offered at the facility.
The Principal asked parents to support the institution by allowing their children to train various causes offered at the institution.
Ashilenje praised the County Government of Kakamega for continuously improving the institution through funding buildings and subsidizing fees for students.
During the function over a hundred trainees were given certificates from various skills areas including Garment Making and Motor Vehicle, Electrical and Electronics plus various other courses.
