Youths in West Pokot County have been Incorporated in a climate change program that is geared towards enhancing drought resilience activities so as to curb hunger that usually hits some parts of the County every year.
The youths drawn from Suam, Riwo and Batei wards in West Pokot County converged at Mtelo hall in Kapenguria constituency where they launched ward development plans for the three wards. The program is funded and spearheaded by local Non governmental organizations. The youths engaged in a one day climate change workshop that seeks to create awareness on climate change and its effects.
West Pokot County has been greatly affected by the changing climate effects, leading to calamities like drought, hunger and more. During the one day workshop, it was discovered that many youths are not aware and do not understand climate change.
Pokot Youth Bunge County forum chairperson Ruto Todosio said the youths will participate in protecting water catchment areas and he urged them to come on board and help save the future of Kenyans. “In West Pokot County climate change affects agriculture, water, biodiversity health and security. Through mercy corps we realized the issues needed to be addressed for the benefit of present and future generations,” he said.
He added that the stability of peace along the borders will help them reach out youths in Turkana, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and Trans Nzoia Counties who will also influence their decisions. He added that the County at large grapples with a number of challenges which include poor farming and livestock rearing methods thus putting residents at a risk of lacking sufficient food to sustain the them through out the year.
