The Covid-19 pandemic has come with its fair share of challenges, with the young population feeling the strain of unemployment and job losses. One of the young guns in Webuye, Enoch Sikuku, has resorted to making hospital beds that are designed to minimize close contact between healthcare workers and patients. The bed will be designed to be remotely controlled, in that a single switch can adjust the patient’s position, if he or she was lying down, the bed cushions them to a sitting position and vice versa, without the help of a doctor or a nurse. “After hearing about the demise of health care workers who attend to Covid-19 patients, I was really hurt and I thought I would chip in and help and that’s why I came up with the special bed idea.”
He added that the virus must be taken seriously and everyone should follow the Ministry of Health’s guidelines on Covid-19 infection prevention. Sikuku, however, urged politicians from Western Kenya to stop politicking and focus on ensuring the funds released by the government to support and cushion small businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic reach the desired targets at the sub countes. He noted it’s painful seeing politicians busy campaigning, yet Kenyans are suffering, and that development agendas have been affected by political supremacy battles evidenced in the political parties like Ford Kenya.
Sikuku, who makes metallic wares among them doors, gates, beds said he has not received support from the County government but instead tax demands have increased every year making it hard for them to go about their businesses and he urged Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati to intervene and help them. He, has, however urged youths to engage in meaningful projects and activities, acknowledging that the Covid-19 pandemic has dealt a huge blow to youths who’ve lost jobs and employment opportunities. He added that some have opted to engage in criminal activities and he urged police officers in Webuye town and environs to be vigilant as many businesses have suffered at the hands of burglars and criminals.
