Youths have been urged to come out and support their parents and the elderly in the society to support the old age especially parents. Addressing the press at Matulo RC Village in Webuye West constituency after receiving foodstuffs and having medical check ups organized by Mr. Chris Ongulo of GAASP Community CBO, elderly persons aged above 81 years led by John Wanyonyi, who is 91 years old, said they are passing through hard times due to their old age and some of them have bene abandoned by their children and the government.
Wanyonyi said they’ve spent lots of money sending their children to school and some have sold important assets, only to be neglected later when they land jobs, leaving them in need of basic needs and living under stressful conditions. They added that the government has also neglected them, with most of them living under the poverty line, with the government’s scheme meant to help them benefitting younger people instead.
They’ve asked the government to find a better way of helping them. Ongulo on his part said he decided to support the elderly in society because most of them have bene neglected and live in hard conditions. He said the foodstuffs he donated will go a long way towards helping the beneficiaries, and reminded the youths to provide the basic needs the elderly require, including necessary health care. Dr. William Rapongo who examined them said they are suffering from old age and lack of access to health care, noting that medical facilities in the villages should be equipped with more drugs.
