Vihiga GK Prisons has been gazetted as a polling station by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The officer in charge of the prison, Mrs. Beverlyne Lungatso, said they’ve got the information the facility has been recognized as a polling station.
The facility that was established in 1997 has a capacity of over 100 prisoners and its expansion is ongoing.
Lungatso said registration of the prisoners who are not yet registered as voters is ongoing adding that those inmates without Identification Cards were assisted in acquiring them, so that they can register.
She said there are some inmates whose terms expire before the general election noting that those serving a longer term will be allowed to vote.
The officer said she was happy with the recognition of the facility as a polling station, adding that officers working at the station and the surrounding community will now be able to vote at the facility.
“Officers in this facility as are always engaged when it comes to providing security at various polling stations across the County on election day but they will get a chance to vote before going out to carry out their duties,” she said.
She said the prison department is determined to build more structures and make Vihiga GK Prison one of the best in the region.
