Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, and Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero are among the leaders who have been blacklisted by the National Integrity Alliance, an anti-corruption civil society organization, and declared unfit to vie for any political seat in the general elections due to corruption cases and other malpractices. The list has 20 leaders and politicians, and also includes incumbent Nairobi Senator and gubernatorial aspirant Mike Mbuvi Sonko, Uasin Gishu County Woman Representative aspirant Gladys Boss Sholei, Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho, Nandi Hills parliamentary aspirant Alfred Kiptoo Keter among others.
The Society for Integration Development-which is part of the National Integrity Alliance-Associate Director Irungu Houghton said that the listed individuals shouldn’t be cleared to vie for political seats and urged relevant institutions to investigate further. The list has been presented to the electoral body IEBC for further action.
The head of Transparency International Sam Kimeu said the individuals are not guilty, but have unresolved issues, and that the content of the compiled report is not a declaration of being guilty given that some cases are still in court.
The investigations that led to the list started in 2013, and relied heavily on authentic and verifiable investigation reports which include reports done by oversight institutions including the Office of the Auditor General in the respective Counties, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ).
