Kibra MP Ken Okoth has succumbed to colorectal cancer. The MP had gone to France for further treatment but jetted back to Kenya some weeks ago, and made a public appearance at the Kibra Music Festival. The MP, who has a great track record in his constituency, has died aged 41.
His condition deteriorated and he was rushed to Nairobi Hospital on Thursday, where he was placed on life support at the ICU but he died after a multiple organ failure. The news of his demise was confirmed on Thursday. According to a close family member, the late Okoth was admitted at the Nairobi Hospital on Thursday, around 5 pm, and around 8 pm his health deteriorated and he was taken to the ICU but died on Friday evening.
Tributes have poured in from leaders, with President Uhuru Kenyatta saying death has robbed the nation of an astute legislator. “It is with a heavy heart that I have this afternoon received the sad news of the death of Kibra MP Hon.Ken Okoth. Death has robbed us of an astute legislator. May God comfort his family, friends & indeed all Kenyans during this difficult period of mourning.” Deputy President William Ruto said Okoth was a distinguished leader, “Deeply saddened by the passing on of Kibra MP Ken Okoth. Okoth was an enthusiastic, energetic, distinguished and public-spirited leader, who served his constituents with dedication and selflessness. He worked tirelessly to better the lives of others and championed welfare of all.”
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the late MP battled cancer with unique bravery while serving his voters to the last minutes of his life, “May God grant peace and strength to his family and may he Rest In Peace.” Chief Justice David Maraga also joined Kenyans in mourning the demise of Okoth, “In his death we have lost a vibrant, dedicated legislator who connected well with his people. May God comfort his family, friends and colleagues.”
