Grief has gripped Lumakanda Township village in Lugari Sub County after a primary school teacher fell in a well with his two year old niece.
According to Mrs. Charity Karani she had gone with her two children to fetch water from her brother in-law’s compound when the tragedy occurred.
She said when they entered the compound her five year old son started playing around the compound as he shouted attracting attention of her in-law Mr. Kenneth Luvanda, a teacher at Lumakanda DEB primary school, who was relaxing in his house.
She said before fetching water she decided to pick maize that had scattered in the compound near the well.
Later , her in-law came out greeted her and carried her two year old daughter and started playing with her as he rotated near the well before he was overwhelmed by dizziness and the two fell in the well which had only been covered with a wire mesh.
“I just saw him fall on the wire mesh and then dropped inside the well while holding my daughter. When I rushed to check inside I couldn’t see them as had fallen in and that’s when I screamed for help,” explained Charity.

Charity’s husband, Mr. Aggrey Karani, who was on his way back home said when he heard his wife crying for help he rushed to the scene where he found his daughter floating on the water in the 30 feet well.
“When I saw my daughter on the water I just jumped into the well without caring how risky it was but I managed to rescue her and got out safely,” said Karani.
However he said after removing the daughter from the well it is when he was informed that his brother was inside too.
“When I jumped in the well I thought it was only my daughter who had fallen there only after rescuing her it is when realized that my brother Kenneth Luvanda was also inside,” he explained.
He said he had to get back inside using a ladder where he found his brother held deep inside with the head facing downwards and managed to remove him before rushing him to Lumakanda sub county hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
