The Kenya Meteorological Department has raised concerns about some fake weathermen who are circulating fake weather reports on social media. In a statement on Thursday, the Kenya Met Department has revealed that the fake forecasters have taken advantage of the current heavy rains being experienced countrywide to dupe unsuspecting Kenyans, and some are even charging fees.
The Department has urged Kenyans to note the official communication from them, “…all weather and/or climate information issued by the Department is presented on the official Departmental letter head, duly signed by the Director, Kenya Meteorological Department Department or County County Directors of Meteorological services in the case of County specific weather and climate forecasts; and free of charge,” said the Kenya Met. They’ve also urged Kenyans to be keen to get information on social media only from the official pages of the Department.
Earlier, the Kenya Met Department had warned of possible flooding in Busia County, with heavy rains expected in the region for a period of three days covering Wednesday to Friday. Heavy rain of 20-50mm is expected in the Nzoia catchment area for the three days and residents have been urged to be on high alert for 24 hours and avoid crossing swollen rivers.
