724 new Covid-19 cases have been confirmed by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, taking the country’s case load to 56,601. Speaking on Monday from Kilifi County, the CS said the new cases were picked from 5,085 samples, with cumulative tests conducted now at 704,605. The youngest of the new cases is a 1-year-old child and the oldest is 84-years old.

14 patients have succumbed to the virus, raising the total fatalities to 1,027. The recoveries have also risen to 37,442, after 248 patients recovered in the last 24 hours. 178 were from the home based care program and 70 were discharged from hospitals.

When it comes to admissions, he said close to 1,300 people are currently admitted in various hospitals with 54 in the Intensive Care Unit. Out of this, 28 are on supplementary oxygen, 26 patients are on ventilatory support and 10 in the High Dependency Unit.

With the positivity rate now at 14.2%, CS Kagwe has warned political leaders against holding rallies that may fuel the spread of the virus. “Over the last week, we have seen close to 100 deaths, the highest number yet,” he said, adding that leaders will think about what to escalate and de-escalate in terms of reopening the country.
