Farmers in Mbakalo Ward, Tongaren Constituency converged at the educational field work in Karima village to acquire knowledge and skills on how best they can practice farming and earn more income.

The event was organized by various Maize Seed companies in collaboration with World Food Programme to educate farmers by encouraging them to embrace modern farming methods and new technology.

Sylverious Sifuna, an officer from Panar Maize Seed Company told farmers to choose wisely while purchasing maize seeds citing that a good number of farmers have had low yields as a result of poor choice of maize seeds they purchased during the planting season.

He however, advised farmers to always embrace early preparations of their farms ahead of the planting season and seek piece of advice on the quality seeds that can do well and yield more.

Following the drop in maize production over the years, Sifuna noted that it was as a result of poor farming methods and lack of knowledge among farmers on how best they can practice farming and get good yields.

Metrine Simiyu, agriculture officer in Mbakalo Division asked farmers to adhere to the rules while storing their maize to avoid losses asking them to seek pieces of advice whenever need arises in order to enhance food production and security.

Timothy Musakali, director at one of the non-governmental organization affiliated to the World Food Programme, advised farmers to sell their farm produce to the organization citing that it will earn them more profits than selling to the local markets.

Assistant County Commissioner Mbakalo Division Joseph Achumi was however saddened by a number of farmers who have started selling their maize at a cheap price revealing that they will soon start purchasing the very maize at a high cost. He advised them to properly store their maize and other food stuffs well in order to avoid hunger in future.
