The government has confirmed 7 more Covid-19 cases in Kenya, out of 707 tested samples with the total number of cases now at 303. All new patients are Kenyans, 6 from Mombasa and 1 from Nairobi. 9 patients have also recovered and have been discharged, with the number of recoveries increasing to 83.
Speaking on Wednesday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe urged Kenyans to listen to what the government says, noting that all it takes to beat the Coronavirus is self discipline. He faulted those who’ve escaped from quarantine centers, after a video circulated online showing some people jumping over the perimeter wall of the KMTC Nairobi on Tuesday. He said Kenyans who know such individuals should report them, “Kenyans who know an individual who was in quarantine who is now proposing that you should be living normally with them….. That individual is going to cost you very very highly,” he said. Security officers are pursuing those who escaped from the quarantine centre.
The CS said the exercise of mass testing is ongoing, targeting high risk areas, “25,000 testing kits have been deployed for this activity.” He revealed that the testing target for Kenya is 250,000 tests by the end of June, adding that the surveillance testing mechanisms will include community based surveillance, hospital based surveillance, population based surveillance. However, he said countries have fallen short of the testing targets due to the global disruption of supplies.
The government has further ordered cessation of movement into and out of Mandera County to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. The County has a total of 8 cases, 2 being urban refugees. It’s now the fifth County to be under the order, after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi.
