Health support worker arrested in Nandi, later released

The Kapsabet County Referral Hospital

A support staff who had been dismissed along with other employees by the government of Nandi due to an alleged huge wage bill, was on Monday arrested by the police at the Kapsabet County referral hospital facility where he had accompanied his ailing wife. The reasons for his arrest is not known although it’s believed by some to be related to alleged incitement of casual workers.

The middle aged man, Mark Kirwa, is among the health workers that were dismissed days ago by the county government of Nandi without their nine months salary dues. Kirwas was arrested and taken to Kapsabet police station where he recorded a statement with the DCI before he was locked up in the cells, a situation which triggered protests from other health workers who called for his release. They said Kirwa was fighting for their rights by demanding the administration to pay their salaries, with majority of them unable to navigate tough times brought about by lack of financial stability.

He was later on released but vowed he won’t relent in the fight for their rights.
