Two children from Mufutu village, Lugari location in Lugari Sub County sustained serious injuries after they were struck by lightning.
According to the neighbors, the lightning incident, which was accompanied by rainfall, occurred in the compound of Mr. Kenneth Odera when the children were alone at home.
“It had just started raining and the two children were carrying a bed which had been left outside to the house when the tragedy struck,” said Mrs. Ruth Esipila, a neighbour who was the first person to reach the scene.
She said the victims’ father lives in Bungoma where he is employed as a farmhand while their mother Linet Anguzuzu who is a casual laborer had gone to work leaving the children alone when the incident occurred.
Mrs. Esipila informed other neighbours who responded immediately and jointly tried to give First Aid to the victims before they were rushed to Koromait dispensary where they were referred to Webuye County Hospital in neighbouring Bungoma County due to the magnitude of their injuries.
Two other children who were in the house at the time of the incident escaped without injuries.
Residents, led by Saul Ambani have appealed to leaders from the area and well-wishers to address the problem of lightning by installing arrestors in the area to prevent future tragedies.
