A report released by the Kakamega county assembly’s budget and appropriation committee reveals that 1.6 billion shillings have been misappropriated by various ministries of the county government of Kakamega.

Speaking to the press, members of the committee led by the Mahiakalo ward member of county assembly Cleophas Malala said that the billions cannot be accounted for and called upon the EACC and DPP Keriako Tobiko to quickly investigate the claims.

Malala said that the scam was revealed by the committee’s chairperson while presenting the financial report for 2014-2015 when they realized the blanks.

His counterpart Kelvin Olengo, the Namamali ward MCA said that it is their role to play oversight and won’t watch as billions of the residents’ money is washed down the drain. He is of the idea that governor Oparanya Wycliffe dissolves his cabinet and hires people who can be accountable.

In response, the acting CEC member in charge of finance at the county Kulati Wangia said that they have not been served with the report and thus cannot comment on the hearsay.

Kulati called upon the residents to remain calm as they wait for the said report’s verification before they can respond to the accusations.

He was of the stand that all the public fund has been used appropriately and whoever is tarnishing the county’s name should be ready to come out with evidence.
