Mt. Elgon residents to wait longer for CDF services

Residents of Mt. Elgon constituency will have to wait for unknown period of time to access funds from the National Government Constituency Development Fund kitty after a group of individuals moved to court to bar a committee that was to be in charge of the kitty to assume office.

The residents are a disillusioned lot after they found out that the funds they were depending on fully to pay for their children’s school fees in both high school and higher institutions of learning will not be forthcoming as soon as expected.

Ndiema Matwoi a resident from Elgon ward said he has children in secondary schools and have always been sponsored by the fund saying it is unfortunate that schools are going to re-open very soon and he has no other alternative of getting money to pay for their school fees.

Another resident Milka Kiza a widow lamented that the fund is meant to help the people of Mt. Elgon constituency and it is unfortunate that the residents cannot be able to access it saying they are fearing that their children may drop out of school due to lack of school fees as they have been fully depending on the bursary from the kitty.

The area residents appealed for reconciliation among the aspirants and those in power saying the residents are innocent and cannot be able to access the funds after applying saying it has also affected other projects funded by the kitty.

Area MP John Bomet Serut said after the CDF was restructured to National Government Constituency Development Fund in order to suit in to the new constitution a committee had to be put into office to oversee the implementation of the projects.

He disclosed to have met principals from the entire constituency who were raising concern over how they will get funds for sponsored students and some vowed to send away students who will not have cleared their school fees saying the schools cannot run without funds.

“The kitty cannot be able to transact anything without the committee in place as the chairman will have to append his signature for the bursary as well as other projects funded by the fund to be implemented hence the situation has now been grounded” he said

However as the area Mp together with other stakeholders including the OCPD and area Deputy County Commissioner, they promised to have the issue sorted out but called upon the residents not to take the law in their own hands saying the law will have to take its course.
