Farmers in Vihiga County got a chance to learn the skills necessary for practising good farming that paves way for an improved harvest and high-quality produce.

A field day that was organized by Kenya Seed Company in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture at Mulele Primary School in Sabatia Sub County brought together farmers from across the County and neighbouring counties.

Sammy Chepsiror, the Company’s Sales Executive, said farmers must be well versed with current farming methods and the kind of seeds that do well in the regions they come from.

He said the company has invested heavily on research to make sure it produces seeds that cope in various climates across the country and East Africa.

Chepsiror noted that Vihiga County gets enough rain, and Hybrid maize seeds that can do well in the region are 6213, 614, 517 and 513.

“We recommend farmers in this County to plant the recommended type of seeds because they perform well and produce more in this region,” he said.

He said that shortage of food in the country is something that must be dealt with through proper farming methods and sowing the right seeds, adding that the government must work with various stakeholders in the Agriculture sector to achieve this.

Nixon Amendi, the Executive Member in the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Cooperatives in the County said they are ready to work with Kenya Seed to make sure farmers get high-quality seeds and training to enable them to practice good farming in the area.

“As a Ministry, we are determined to work with like-minded stakeholders in the sector to improve agricultural activities in the County,” said Amendi.

He said the County has experienced food shortage despite conducive environment for farming.

“We as Vihiga farmers if we practice proper farming methods and use the recommended seeds for various crops, we can produce food that can sustain the entire County and sell the remaining produce to other Counties across the country,” Amendi added.
