A sombre mood during the weekend engulfed hilly Kipkindul village in Marakwet West constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County as St. Joseph’s Boys High School Kitale Principal Wilson Tich Yego was laid to rest at his home.

The late Yego succumbed to Viral Pneumonia on the 7th of March after undergoing treatment at Mediheal hHospital in Eldoret. The family dismissed reports that he died of Covid-19.

Limited number of mourners were allowed at his home to pay him the last respect with heavy police presence to ensure compliance with Covid-19 protocols.

Several principals and teachers graced the burial that was tightly monitored by security officers. However, hundreds of mourners who had travelled the hilly village for the burial of a man regarded as a community hero had to watch the session on the fence and others stood on the road.

In a tight burial programme, few mourners were allowed to speak and give their condolences before Catholic Bishop Maurice Crawley led the burial service.

Bishop Maurice Crawley regretted the demise of the principal whom he said worked closely during his tenure at St Joseph’s high school.

Local leaders and the Education sector fraternity led residents in paying last tributes to an educationist who is celebrated for mentoring many in his profession.

Leaders led by Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen, deputy governor Wilsey Rotich, Ministry of Environment PS Chris Kiptoo and former Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo among others eulogised the late as a great pillar in his community and a mentor in the education sector.

“We have lost a very resourceful person in our region. We will make sure we support his dream of supporting education in this region.’ Said Deputy governor Wisley Rotich.

Senator Murkomen eulogised the late principal as an academic giant and a man loved by many in the community.

“We have lost a great person who could be difficult to know his status in society until you engage him. He was a humble person.” Said Murkomen.

Elgeyo Marakwet Kuppet Executive Secretary Paul Biwott said the region has lost a resourceful teacher and an administrator.

“Mr Yego achieved so much wherever he has been. As KUPPET we are here to support his family bear this heavy loss.” Said Biwott.

The latter has left a widow Susan Kunani Yego and three children Fabian Kiprop, Charlene Jepchirchir and Patrick Kibet.
